LayerZero Labs Raises $120 Million for Data Interoperability Protocol Expansion

Interoperability protocol LayerZero Labs has raised $120m in a series B funding round featuring 33 investors including Christie’s auction house, NFT platform OpenSea and Samsung’s next-gen investment unit. The funding values the firm at $3bn. LayerZero is not inherently connected to financial or gaming services, according to co-founder and CEO Bryan Pellegrino, but is designed to facilitate the transfer of data. LayerZero is the messaging protocol used to move data and assets around different layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum and zkSync. The funds will go towards expanding the team and marketing efforts, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region. LayerZero is also looking to branch out more into the gaming space as it seeks to link fast and cheap execution environments back to primary chains to maintain liquidity. LayerZero is similar to the internet's TCP/IP messaging protocol, operating as a layer beneath applications and products.
