Microsoft CEO: Sam Altman may return to OpenAI in some capacity

Odaily Planet Daily News Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made it clear in interviews with CNBC and Bloomberg TV that Sam Altman, who was dismissed as CEO of OpenAI's board of directors last Friday, may return to OpenAI in some capacity.

Although Sam Altman had previously announced that he planned to join Microsoft's newly established artificial intelligence research team with former OpenAI President Greg Brockman and several former OpenAI researchers.

Nadella said in an interview with CNBC: "Obviously, if Sam Altman and Greg Brockman are not at OpenAI, we hope they have a great place to belong." When asked if Altman would return to OpenAI, Nadella added: "This is up to the OpenAI board, management and employees...(Microsoft) clearly chooses to cooperate with OpenAI, obviously depending on whether OpenAI employees stay there or come to Microsoft, so I am open to both options."

Nadella's response seems to confirm The Verge's report that Altman's joining Microsoft is not yet final. According to reports, Ilya Sutskever, the mastermind behind Altman's departure, recently changed his mind and only two of the remaining three members of the OpenAI board of directors can bring Altman back.

Nadella also said that Microsoft hopes to see some changes in the future of OpenAI's governance, including changes in investor relations. It is reported that Microsoft, other supporters of OpenAI, and most of OpenAI's employees received notice of Altman's dismissal "a few minutes" before the announcement was made. OpenAI is managed by a non-profit organization, and the board of directors belongs to the organization, while investors (including Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI so far) do not have seats on the board of directors.

Nadella told CNBC: "Obviously, some changes must be made in governance-we will have a good dialogue with their board of directors and gradually resolve this issue as the situation develops." (TechCrunch)
