Coinbase's Layer 2 blockchain platform, Base, set a new record for daily transactions on September 14, 2023, with 1.88 million transactions. This surpassed the combined figures of its competitors, Arbitrum and Optimism.

The surge in activity was largely due to the decentralized social network platform, Friend.tech, which operates on Base's infrastructure. Friend.tech experienced a notable uptick in usage, with its daily transactions also hitting a record high of 529,000. The success of Base is attributed to the evolving Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem, where different platforms carve out specialized niches.
