Universal Music Group Tells Streaming Services to Block AI-Generated Music

Universal Music Group (UMG) has asked streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music to block AI services from harvesting melodies and lyrics from copyrighted songs. UMG has reportedly been sending out requests to take down AI-generated songs that have been popping up on streaming services with increased frequency. Developers have used music catalogs on streaming platforms to train AI technology, but UMG has become increasingly concerned about AI bots using intellectual property to produce music identical to actual artists. A source close to the situation said that the next generation of technology emerging poses significant issues. Google has also announced its own machine-learning music apparatus called MusicLM, which will be able to generate "high-fidelity music from text descriptions."

Elon Musk Buys Thousands of GPUs for Twitter's Generative AI Project

Despite advocating for an industry-wide halt to AI training, Elon Musk has reportedly kicked off a major artificial intelligence project within Twitter. The company has already purchased approximately 10,000 GPUs and recruited AI talent from DeepMind for the project that involves a large language model (LLM), reports Business Insider.

Chinese Authorities to Enforce Security Reviews for AI Services

China's internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, has announced that it will enforce mandatory reviews of generative AI services prior to their public operation. The providers of AI services must ensure that all content is accurate, respects intellectual property, and does not discriminate or endanger security. Additionally, all AI-generated content must be clearly labeled as such. This announcement follows Baidu's unveiling of its new AI chatbot, ERNIE, which is built off of an AI-based deep learning model. Governments around the world are grappling with how to handle the rise of AI services, with Japan showing support for OpenAI's ChatGPT and the US President urging tech firms to consider the risks of AI to society, national security, and the economy. Meanwhile, Italy has placed a temporary ban on ChatGPT following a data breach on the platform, and OpenAI is facing a privacy probe in Canada after allegations of harvesting personal information.
