Digicel was founded in 2001 by Irish businessman Denis O'Brien. Digicel's networks provide reliable, high-speed communications technology to millions of customers in over 32 markets throughout the Caribbean, Asia Pacific and Central America.

Digicel grew quickly in the Caribbean after launching in Jamaica in April 2001. Within five years, the company had set up services in 13 countries, including St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Aruba, Grenada, and Antigua. During this time, Digicel also acquired Curacao Telecom, Cingular's operations in the Caribbean and Bermuda, and Bouygues Telecom Caraibe.

Digicel began diversifying its business in the mid-2010s with the acquisition of Caribbean Cable Communications Holding Limited and the purchase of the Caribbean Submarine Fibre Network. The company continued to acquire internet and television companies and relaunch them under the Digicel brand throughout the decade. In September 2016, Digicel launched the Play Go streaming app in Jamaica.
Digicel has earned several awards for its services, including the Avaya Award for Best Project of The Year in 2016 and the World Communications Award for Best Operator in an Emerging Market in 2019. In October 2019, Netflix ranked Digicel as the best streaming experience in Jamaica.

In October 2020, the company launched itself as a Digital Operator. Digicel would deliver powerful digital experiences for customers through a suite of eight apps that offer sports, music, news, local radio, podcasts, and messaging on the go.

Digicel is committed to the countries and communities where it operates and gives back through promotions and educational opportunities.
The Digicel Foundation was established in Jamaica in 2004 and currently has sister foundations in Haiti, Papua New Guinea and Trinidad and Tobago. The Digicel Foundation has built almost 200 schools in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, delivers programmes and infrastructure projects for those with special needs in Jamaica, provides mobile health clinics to citizens in Papua New Guinea, and supports social entrepreneurship programmes in Trinidad and Tobago.
