Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and the owner of Twitter, announced that the social media platform will be open-sourcing all code used to recommend tweets on March 31st.
In response to his own tweet, Musk admitted that Twitter's current algorithm is overly complex and not entirely understood internally. He acknowledged that people will likely discover some silly things, but they will work on patching issues as soon as they are found. He stated:
"Our 'algorithm' is overly complex & not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things , but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found!"
Additionally, the team is developing a simplified approach to recommend more compelling tweets, but it is still a work in progress.
