Twitter Withdraws from EU Code of Practice on Online Disinformation, Faces Regulatory Risk Under Digital Services Act

Twitter has withdrawn from the EU's voluntary Code of Practice on online disinformation, but as a very large online platform, it is still legally required to comply with the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) and mitigate risks to civic discourse and electoral processes. The deadline for compliance is in three months, and failure to comply could result in penalties or even losing access to a region with 440 million consumers. Twitter's decision to leave the Code could lead to increased regulatory risk and potential sanctions for rule flouting. Elon Musk's promotion of conspiracy theories on the platform puts him on a collision course with EU regulators who have stricter regulations against anti-democratic manipulation.
