How China’s ShareIt became the world’s go-to file-transfer app

ShareIt, a Chinese app developed by Lenovo employees in the mid-2010s, has become a popular file-transfer app in countries where data costs are high and internet connectivity is poor. ShareIt creates local Wi-Fi hotspots to transfer files faster than Bluetooth and has attracted millions of users in emerging markets such as Pakistan, South Africa, and the Philippines. The app claims to have reached 2.4 billion downloads globally but was banned in India alongside 58 other apps of Chinese origin in June 2020. ShareIt has since shifted its focus to Southeast Asia but faces challenges retaining users as internet coverage improves globally and data costs decrease.
