FIFA has launched a mobile game called FIFA World Cup AI League, a strategy game that uses artificial intelligence for its characters, gameplay elements, and cosmetics. The open beta version of the game is currently available on Android with an iOS version to be launched soon.
The game features cartoonish and brightly-colored creatures controlled by AI for their movements, strengths, and weaknesses. Similar to fantasy football, players take on the role of coaches and team owners. Aaron McDonald, co-founder of Altered State Machine, said the aim is to promote AI gaming in the metaverse and unlock a unique opportunity for football enthusiasts around the globe.
Although the game is free-to-play, an NFT marketplace will be launched soon. The decision to delay is to ensure a frictionless user experience, away from focusing on and being distracted by the NFT elements. FIFA is experienced in the crypto world as it partnered with other Web3 game studios for World Cup-themed integrations and enlisted a crypto sponsor for the 2022 World Cup.
FIFA also launched its NFT platform, making NFT minted characters available for the FIFA World Cup. Once the marketplace becomes operational, all AI League characters will be available as NFTs. The game currently offers maps inspired by Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Yaoundé, and Seoul, and it's expected that more will be added after the official launch. Although the game does not feature famous football stars, it has attracted soccer fans looking for an entertaining game with excellent graphics and gameplay.
