Lawmakers in the upper house of the U.K. Parliament have agreed that the Online Safety Bill, which aims to protect children from harm online, will also apply to the metaverse. The metaverse, a collection of virtual realities, has become increasingly popular in recent years and poses a risk to child safety.
The bill, which is technology-neutral and future-proofed, applies to anything communicated via an internet service, including objects and avatars created by users as well as interactions between users in the metaverse. The decision to include the metaverse in the bill was made to ensure the safety of children in these immersive virtual reality experiences.
